wifi and cell phone apps

I have shaw internet in my suite (basement suite), and my phone apps will not work on the wifi, so I am burning up cell data everytime I want to get on wifi to look up something on my phone.  Any suggestions? as to what needs to be done to clear this issue up.

Which cable-modem do you have?

Which smart-phone do you have? Android? Apple? Google?

Which apps "will not work" ? What happens when you try to use those apps?  Error-message?

Have you enabled WiFi on your smart-phone? Have you connected it to the SSID being broadcast by your cable-modem? (The password for the WiFi is on the label on the side of the cable-modem.)
