Making Calls while Roaming Internationally

To make calls while roaming internationally, dial numbers as ["+" Country Code + Phone Number]. The "+" symbol can be accessed by pressing and holding the "0" key in your phone’s dialer. The addition of the “+” is also required when making calls back to Canada while roaming in destinations other than the U.S.

If you’ve added a U.S. or International Roaming Pass

  • Calls made to Canada from a destination included in your Roaming Pass are included (up to the minutes included in the pass)
  • Calls made locally within the destination that you are currently roaming in are included (up to the minutes included in the pass, when roaming in an included destination)
  • Calls made to a destination other than Canada or locally within your current roaming destination will be charged at a roaming rate of $3.50/min
  • Calls made to toll-free numbers from the U.S. and Canada while roaming, will not be charged if U.S. roaming is included in your plan or if you have the U.S. roaming add-on

If you subscribe to the Unlimited + U.S. & Mexico Plan

  • Calls made to Canada from the U.S. or Mexico are included/unlimited
  • Calls made to a local U.S. phone number while roaming in the U.S. are included/unlimited
  • Calls made to a local Mexico phone number while roaming in Mexico are included/unlimited
  • Calls made to a destination other than Canada or locally while roaming in the U.S. or Mexico are charged a roaming rate of $3.50/min

Pay-per-use Roaming

  • Calls made to Canada from the destination you are roaming in or made locally within the roaming destination are charged at the “Talk” roaming rates for that destination. Find the most up-to-date rates on our website.
  • Calls made to a destination other than Canada or locally within your current roaming destination will be charged a roaming rate of $3.50/min

Any calls made to satellite phone numbers while roaming internationally will be charged a rate of $10.00/min.

When making calls to toll-free numbers from the U.S. or Canada while roaming, if your plan does not include U.S. roaming or you are not subscribed to a U.S. roaming add-on, you will be charged Pay-Per-Use (PPU) rates.

Calls made from the Nationwide network to numbers within Canada are unlimited. When making calls to an international destination from the Nationwide network, standard international calling rates apply. International calling Add-Ons such as Preferred International Calling or Unlimited U.S. Calling are valid on both the Shaw and Nationwide networks.

Reaching your Roaming Pass Limit

Once the inclusions of your Roaming Pass have been used up, additional use is charged at pay-per-use rates for the destination that you are currently roaming in. Make sure you confirm current International Roaming rates. To avoid unexpected charges, we recommend adding an additional Roaming Pass when you reach the included limits.

If you subscribe to the Unlimited + U.S. & Mexico Plan

  • Once the Nationwide + U.S. & Mexico mobile data limit is reached, access to mobile data is suspended while roaming in the U.S. or Mexico. To add more data, visit My Shaw Mobile to add a Roaming Pass or a “Shaw Nationwide + U.S. & Mexico Data” One-Time Pass.

WiFi Calling Outside of Canada

WiFi Calling is included and available to Shaw Mobile customers with compatible iOS and Android devices. WiFi Calling allows compatible devices to make and receive calls, plus send text, picture, and video messages over a WiFi connection using Voice-over-WiFi (VoWiFi) technology instead of a mobile network connection.

Once enabled, WiFi Calling features are available anywhere in the world when connected to a WiFi network with a reliable Internet connection. Your phone number remains the same and you can use your phone exactly like you would when connected to the Shaw network in Canada.

When using WiFi Calling internationally, all outgoing calls to any phone number in Canada, all incoming calls, and messages sent to any global mobile phone number are included. To ensure that you do not incur roaming charges, we strongly suggest enabling Airplane/Flight Mode (or turning off mobile network connectivity) and enabling WiFi on your device before making a call or sending a message.

See additional information about WiFi Calling with Shaw Mobile.

Sending Picture or Video Messages (MMS) While Roaming

If the functionality is supported by our roaming partner, picture and video messages (MMS messages) can be sent and received. Picture and video messages are not included in SMS limits available on Roaming Passes and use mobile data instead. As a result, sending and receiving MMS messages use from the mobile data limits of Roaming Passes, or are charged at “Data” roaming rates for the destination that you are located in. If data roaming is disabled on your device, you will not be able to send or receive MMS messages when outside of the Shaw network.

How do I know I'm Roaming?

In most cases, your device will roam on to one of our US or international partner networks automatically and will display the name of the partner network, along with an “R” symbol next to the signal icon to indicate that you are roaming.

If you plan on using mobile data while travelling, settings on your device may need to be adjusted to allow this. For more information on device settings and data caps, visit our article on Long Distance and Roaming.
