The Shaw network is equipped with VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology for improved voice quality, faster call setup times, and the simultaneous use of fast LTE data while you’re on a call. Plus, if your phone is compatible with WiFi Calling, your calls can seamlessly transition from VoLTE to WiFi Calling, or even to 3G where necessary.

When and where LTE is not available, calls made or received when connected to Shaw Mobile will continue to be available on our 3G network.

Device and Network Compatibility

VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology is included and available on new and recently launched iPhone and Android devices but is not supported by all manufacturers. Even if a device is capable of VoLTE, it may not include the necessary configuration for the Shaw network, and instead will use our 3G network for voice service. VoLTE is only available when connected to the Shaw LTE network and is not currently available on Nationwide or when roaming internationally on partner networks.

The Canadian variants of the following popular devices purchased from Shaw, other carriers, or direct from the manufacturer are VoLTE-compatible with Shaw Mobile. Ensure the software on your device is up-to-date:

  • Apple iPhone 6 / 6 Plus and newer
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 / S8+ and newer
  • Samsung Note 8 and newer
  • Google Pixel 3 / 3 XL / 3a and newer

Note: Shaw cannot guarantee VoLTE compatibility for devices not purchased directly from us.

Enabling VoLTE on iOS

Before getting started, confirm your phone is compatible with VoLTE, then take the steps below to enable VoLTE on your iPhone:

Make sure your phone’s software is fully up to date using the following steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu
  2. Tap General
  3. Select Software Update
  4. Install any available updates

Ensure VoLTE is enabled on your iPhone using the following steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu
  2. Tap Cellular
  3. Select Cellular Data Options
  4. Select Voice & Data
  5. Set to LTE, VoLTE On

Note: Your device should automatically have VoLTE enabled when you received the Shaw Mobile Carrier Bundle Update.

Enabling VoLTE on Android

Take the steps below to enable VoLTE on your compatible Android phone:

Make sure your phone’s software is fully up to date using the following steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu
  2. Using the search functionality, type Update
  3. Select Software Update or Update Now
  4. Install any available updates

Ensure that VoLTE is enabled on your Android device using the following steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu
  2. Using the search functionality, type VoLTE
  3. Toggle VoLTE to enabled
  4. Restart your phone, if prompted

Troubleshooting Voice Calls

When using our Extended Range LTE network, VoLTE (Voice-over-LTE) is required to make calls in areas that may not have 3G service available. As a result, access to Extended Range LTE is only available to VoLTE compatible devices.
