Arris TG4482A, XB7 & XiOne-SC Tv Boxes, Freezing, WiFi & LAN dropping out.

SteelTown
Grasshopper

My Arris TG4482A, XB7 & XiOne-SC Tv Boxes, keep locking up or Freeze; watching TV, Saved Movies or Apps like (Disney+) at times feel that we are on Dial-Up. The 3 TV Boxes are all on xb7 WiFi.  The Xi's become in such an unrecoverable state that at times, TV goes blank, have to unplug the Xi power cords (not like the ruko whereas when you hit the home button and they allways go home).

The last 3 months has been horrible, and the wife & kids are yelling almost daily "internet's down again". Only had the XB7 with 250 mps speed for maybe 6 months now. My older 50 mgs modem used for 14 years was configured as pass through only, was rock solid.

It's been so bad that why should I, rent equipment that does not work. So have returned back the 2nd and 3rd Xi boxes. (BTW rogers raised the rental price of each by 7 dollars, (now $732 a year for them including tax.)  You can buy a Ruko or Google TV box for 70+ bucks and or add the Shaw app and watch the same channels for a fraction of the cost, even though rogers made $22.7 million last year.

In trying to trouble shoot, also why does the wifi & lan drop out, sometimes all the computers, and laptops stop connecting while netflick is still running on the tv. other times it's the opposite, it also seems that the RUKO is far more dependable overall then the Xi's, using the same netflix and disney apps.

Had the techs look in my XB7 three times, now to see what is wrong and they can't find anything. Have powered down my switch, my router, and then the XB7. and cable wire. then it works for a time. Have also discovered just unplugging and plugging back in the LAN cable out of the XB7 without a reboot will shortly correct my lan, even though my laptop is on the "shaw Lan" it, and its down too. Also noticed that the xb7 runs hot so have positioned it so that more natural air flow will enter at the bottom (cannot hear if it has an internal cooling fan). have looked at the power levels and to me they seem low.

Have a single 3.5db splitter to split for home phone modem and internet modem. We are on an older cable segment from the 1960's. Unlike Bell who strung new fiber across my backyard a year ago.

With splitter signal is -7, no splitter -5, with a powered booster 4.4, with booster powered off like a power failure -2.5

Also notice that router is transmitting 4 SSID, 3 hidden (only need 1or 2 for 2.5g and 5g) so are my neighbors broadcasting hidden ones. even through my "MY Shaw account" says not to do it.  Did a wifi frequency scan of all wifi in area, to see if Neighbours were on same frequencies and were not.

XB7 is located in basement, TV is 10 feet away above it wood floor, other tv's farther away in bedroom and basement, got the signal is weak warning but they worked fine. Was going to string CAT5 cables to all the Xi boxes to see if wifi was the problem but when LAN was cutting out gave up.

asked tec's if firmware was recent? xb7 version hw 10, boot version 4.2.28.668728, downloaded version 7.3.4.9.114

downstream channels

29-32: -5.0 to -5.4,

33: -7.5

Upstream Channels

1-4: mostly 45-46
7: 57.7

CM errors
lots on Ch 3: 895 & 47: 1978

xb7 uptime 1 hour.

Also had to upgrade everything to this xb7 and Xi to qualify for 2 year discount. Regrettably had to return 2 rental PVRs, and modem.  NO credits were given whatsoever for my two purchased personal PVR's, they became useless bricks. The only way to recover something useful was to cut them open and put the hard drives into my PC and reformat them. Took almost of 5 days to connecting a video capture card to the hdmi output of the PVR and transfer (play them one by one) of all the saved moves over to my PC.  Shaw didn't care if you lost them.

The old PVR had live saved broadcasts of family members on news specials, kids in live sports and award ceremonies on Shaw Cable 10 community channel.

Getting frustrated, so just installed a high definition external antenna for all my TVS, using the cablevision to all the tv's, when the 2 year contact come due in a few years will simply drop all TV channels and just keep internet.

Just want the stuff to work right. If it doesn't since its rental, replace it.

Anyways will call the tech to come to my home to look at it, do a line signal test at the telephone pole junction box, yah they cut off and changed all the RF connectors a few years ago.

@SteelTown How long is the drop across the backyard? I guarantee that the lines and equipment outside have been upgraded since the 1960s. I would focus on getting that amp out of there, Rogers could eliminate the phone modem and move that service to the XB7, which would allow you to eliminate that splitter. Go to 10.0.0.1 and go to Gateway/Connection/Shaw Network and tell me the downstream and upstream power levels.

@SteelTown wrote router is transmitting 4 SSID, 3 hidden (only need 1or 2 for 2.5g and 5g)

Is it also transmitting WiFi to your Xi6/XiOne TV boxes, via "hidden" channels?

My XB7 is only slightly warm to the touch, near the top of it, and it is not "surrounded" by other hardware or books.  So, the air-flow is OK.

Update: the shaw tech who came to my home was very friendly and wanted to improve things.

Since the cable from the pole to the house was new a few years back what he did was this.
1a) on the roof put a frequency unit on cable connector and noticed the bad frequencies
1b) cut off the connector at the pole eliminated it by
1c) pulled 8 feet into the garage, to connect it to existing older cable, and cut off excess removing 15 feet.  thus my termination box is inside. (he wanted to replace the remaining older cable with new, but to do so, would have to cut holes in drywall and pull new wire in the attic and down inside the wall, this would only be done as a last resort.
1d) changed the connector on the old wire before the 3.5bd splitter, and also the connector on the cable that screws onto the XB7.
1e) did a signal test and noticed a portion of the frequency spectrum had improved. He commented that the older cable types do not do well with all new frequencies. but then he climbed the backyard pole a did a frequency test their and noticed that the subdivision cable segment has issues before it even gets into my home.
1f) he then replaced my XB7, he said were were a group of XB7 that were overheating, they did not know if it was a fault of the unit, or new firmware issue, and he felt mine and it was too way too hot. i googled the specs of the xb7 and shaw tear down photos and there are two fans within this unit. He also Reconfigured the bx7 to my needs and reprogrammed the TV XiOne box and its remote to operate correctly with my Tv.
1g) all was well and he left. but later that night, all the PC's on my Dlink lan again lost connection, but netflick was still operating fine on the RUKO on same lan. So how does pcs stop but ruko still work.
1h) plugged in laptop to XB7 compared network settings of pc vs dlink router. only noticed one difference,  shaw DNS goto shaw ip, my dlink dns wanted to goto a dlink's recommended default dns of 204.194.232.200 and 204.194.234.200 (OPEN DNS, LLC, IL, usa) but i noticed when whois it had a .BR brazil.
1i) after figuring out how to turn off dns on dlink and made it to grab shaws dns, then my pc's connected back to the net.  HENCE and assuming shaw  MUST be not be allowing, or blocking the dnd requests that are not going to their dns.

Ok then all seemed good, untill tonight watching disney +,

got a internet disconnect pop up, and the XiOne TV remote hung up, no matter what button i pressed and tv stayed black. Now what.

2) plugged laptop into XB7 and checked all settings but in the logs and wow the XB7 firewall had an attack which it could not handle and the firewall killed the internet. i had IPV6 attacks, fw.ipv6 forward drop 98 attacks and fw.ipv6 input drops 69 attackes both at the same time.
2a) researched on this, most sites say firmware needs to be updated,
2b ok then how do i disable ipv6 on the xb7, guess what you cannot. but i can on my dlink router. lots of other rogers and shaw users have this same problems in the forums.
2c) most say xb7 is problematic and to reconfigure the XB7 as a pass through device only and terminate all wifi and use your own router.  my router is an older one but i purchased an expensive one and have no problems with it. This new modern XB7 is not meeting my expectations at all.

The monthly price of TV and internet keeps going up, but the quality of the equipment is not. I give the tech who came to my home 2 thumbs up, as he worked quite hard to improve things.

If the ipv6 firewall crash, cannot be resolved by shaw, then may have to go pass through mode, hmm wondering how many of 4 SSIDS the 2.5g, 5g, 6g, and shaws/rogers test ssid will still be active if i reconfigure as pass through only mode i guess thats my next test.

signed puzzled and frustrated.

XB7 Firewall disconnects Internet

Again the XB7 shuts down my internet while watching disney, i checked the logs and yep the XB7 firewall shut everything down. or it cannot handle or do its job correctly. rather it should do its job keeping out the bad stuff but at the same time allow the good stuff to still pass through not shut everything down. . my older router does this what cant the xb7 do it too?

1) the firmware needs to be fixed.
2) if not the router firmware then needs to" give us the option of disabling ivp6", like all the older routers do.

Why should my internet be cut off every couple of days due lousy hardware that we are forced to rent?,

SteelTown

The cable run is comparative to my neighbors on both sides and its length say is moderate, when the shaw tech was here we reduces the length by 15 feet. the subdivision main cable is original but the tech did note that there were problem at the tap on that segment, possibly a bad tap as all the taps are in wired in series with each tap servicing 4-5 homes.

just using the spliter the signal levels were better after the tech fixed the cable, but i would not eliminate the spliter and move the phone over to the XB7 as it has NO battery backup power whatsoever, unlike the phone modem. on the techs frequency meter unit more of the channels were back into the low end of green status moving out off the red bad status, but a couple of channels were still bad due to a bad tap. the xb7 is still stopping and dropping my internet.

these levels are after the tech left ny home

XB7 overheating even with with its internal fans.

the shaw tech swapped out the XB7 as it was way to hot, even though it has internal fans. what amasses me is that the firmware is not setup to monitor internal temperature unlike how the bios in desktop computers do. my laptop being older if the cpu gets hotter the cooling fan will ramp up the rpms and speed up to improve cooling.

intersting that the XiOne tv box connected at 2.5 speed and not 5g or 6g speed, and its only 10 feet away. i will have to figure out how to get into the config page and see the signal levels and then try 5g

XB7 shuts down internet and ingnite TV

Again the xb7 firewall kills my internet 5 more times  (TV says lost internet connection, you tube stops, TV says your wifi need a better password, reboot the router, etc...)

I never had this problem of my service being interrupted by my older router that at was 50 megs speed. This new xb7 is terrible. If WAN attacks on the router are being made you would think that shaw would have the technology to accept monitor the attack and log the ip address were coming from and then they could police their own network. There should be a clause in the rental agreement that states attacking other shaw users on the shaw network is grounds of termination of all shaw services.

if the firewall cannot handle ipv6 then allow or give the router a option in the firmware to disable ipv6 and just use ivp4.

thanks for your response.

i get 9 hops to open dns, only if i am on the xb7 and use shaws dns averaging 48 ms on 80% of hops.

when using my personal dlink router behind the xb7 lan, dns set to open dns, shaw xb7 won't pass through or allow my requests out to open dns.

the really wired thing is that 99% of the time my RUKO can still play movies when laptops and pc are dead because the dns is blocked.
