If the remote was paired properly with the TV (Shaw reply) and no longer controls the TV, note that all the other buttons communicate with the Ignite box using radio, so the remote does not need to be pointed at the box to work.  To control the TV it uses infrared and needs to be pointed at the TV so the infrared light hits the sensor on the TV.

Exactly. The TV processes the on/off & volume up/down & mute signals, so "aim" is important.

The Rogers TV box processes the channel up/down signals (and everything else). I can point the Rogers remote at the ceiling, halfway between my chair & the TV box, and the signals are received.

The Rogers remote needs to be customized to send the correct signals to the TV.
