@ColtonW24  I believe on most value plans, the first box is included and the rest are now $12 each. Some plans may vary on how they discounted the extra boxes, for me the extras were $5 each. On my previous plan, I had 3 boxes and got rid of one when I renewed and just put a FireTV stick on that TV. I will be getting another FireStick for the second TV and keep the XiOne for the main TV. The only drawback with the stick is you can’t pause live TV.

Why wait?  While waiting, you probably are paying over $100 per month. If you break the two-year Value Plan, you will pay $30/month, saving over $70/month. But, before you cancel, contact Telus. In the past, they have offered to pay that $30/month fee, for each remaining month, should you switch to them. I do not know if that promotion is still active.

I just got the news that my "TV Portal" rent is going from $5/month to $12/mth too. I am now looking foralternatives and it seems Amazon Fire sticks are an option, but I am unfamiliar with what that provides.  Is FireTV/Rogers function described somewhere? It sounds like it works well for recorded TV. Does it also stream Rogers live TV?  Another option could be connecting an old computer to the 2nd TV and using the Ignite web interface.  This would be an ideal job for a Raspberry Pi, but of course Rogers doesn't support Linux for Ignite web, so I'd have to dig out an old Windoze PC and deal with all the Microsoft crud.  I don't think my 2nd TV can handle screencasting from my tablet but that could be an option for some.

Interestingly I read my contract and my value plan has a "minimum monthly charge" which included the TV Portal rental, so even if I drop it I will still pay the $5/mth until end of term (for nothin' ).   Not impressed with this move by Rogers. They should have left existing contracts alone IMHO.

Do you think a complaint to the CRTC would have any impact?

@wgk , You are still able to keep 1 tv box per account for no rental charge if you are on a 2 year value plan, any other boxes will incur this new stupid stupid fee.  CRTC doesn't handle this type of complaint, you could try CCTS but I wouldn't hold my breath, no where in the contract does it say that they cannot raise equipment rental fees, you are only covered for your base services.  What a fiasco.

Also, really 'convenient' that they use 'fine print' to change the rental charge during my two year contract phase...seems underhanded when I'm still stuck with the contract. I won't be renewing.

Just received my Sept. to Oct. bill and the increase of $7.00/box has been added.   Tried to contact Rogers/Shaw (live chat) and was 259 in line to speak to a specialist.   Have 3 tvs but one is rarely used - will just go back to apple tv for that one.   I now understand why all the younger people have dumped cable and gone to streaming.   At the end Rogers will lose on this one - I suspect the Telus TV phone lines are ringing off the hook.   Apparently the CRTC isn't interested in hearing these type of concern.  Nonetheless, it appears that the large telecommunication companies are protected from outside vendors coming into Canada.   Is there not a government group/agency who looks out for consumer concerns like this.

I just found out about this robbery. Wow. I started a chat with Shaw to inquire about Internet Pro 2G and they mentioned the rental box increase. How do they justify a 140% increase? That is insanity. So my 2 year value plan will go up by $28 per month because of this. How on earth do they justify a rental price of what is actually $15 / month with a $10 discount to increase it to $22 / month each? We should have a purchase option. I will be looking for alternatives. This is the first time that I have actually had a bad taste in my mouth for Shaw in the almost 30 years I've been a customer.

The "fine print" freezes ONLY your TV & Internet fees for the duration of the contract.

I'm still stuck with the contract.

Not really. It's your choice to continue paying over $100/month, or to cancel the contract and then pay only  $30/month as the cancellation fee.  In the past, TELUS has offered a "buy-out" of that $30/month fee, if you switch to them.  I don't know if this promotion is still available.
