I have two shaw cable boxes, both bought from either Visions or Futureshop. When I had a shaw service tech over,he took my box and replaced it with another.I asked for my box back and he said to keep this one as mine was now gone.I just found out that I have been paying rent for my own box.The boxes are useless to both me and you and I would be happy to sell you one or both and I would also like to have the rent money returned to me.
Lastly,I waited on my cell phone for too many minutes for a person to speak with...why is there no call back.Call me at work as soon as possible.***..tomorrow or friday during the day.I am extremely disappointed with your new rates during these troubled times....but,I guess business is business.
Hi @tedeebar , sorry to hear of the issues you are having. There is a miscommunication between the service tech and yourself, because if you own your own equipment and it breaks down there is no way that Shaw can just swap out your dead box for a new one without you paying a rental fee for the new box. That wouldn't make any sense at all, you would get a new box for free. I wouldn't hold my breath for a rental refund, why didn't you notice the increase in your monthly statement earlier since you say they have been charging you for the rental, it would clearly show on each invoice. If you are not having any luck with getting a hold of Shaw thru the phone then why not try the chat service it is currently preferred, or maybe reach out thru social media ie. twitter/facebook, This is a peer to peer forum so please never ever put your personal info. such as phone number on a public forum for everyone to see, Leaving a message for Shaw to call you on here is not going to work.
@tedeebar -- I am extremely disappointed with your new rates during these troubled times ...
In January 2020, Shaw announced a price-increase for June 2020. Due to the troubles with COVID-19, they cancelled that increase, and created the free-to-all "ShawGo" WiFi network. Recently, Shaw has announced a price-increase for January 2021. Note that if you are on a Shaw "Value Plan", that increase will not affect you, until your two-year contract has ended. That is good for you.
If you are not on a "Value Plan", sign-up today, to freeze your costs for the next 24 months. That could be good for you.
Also, if you are on a "Value Plan", check your monthly invoice from Shaw. You are charged for the rental of the new box, but there is an matching "credit" for the same amount. So, the monthly cost of the "rental" is ZERO. That is good for you.
> return the rent
You said that your purchased those 2 boxes. There should not be a "rental" fee for them. When did you first see the rental fee being listed on your monthly invoices?
Lastly, Shaw recommends that you use online chat, instead of telephone, to contact them. However, when I do telephone Shaw, I do it late in the evening (after 10 PM Pacific), and get connected quite quickly to a Shaw call-centre in Ontario or in the Maritimes, because Shaw offers 24/7 service.
Hi again, actually @mdk the poster said that he had purchased 2 boxes outright but one of them failed so when the tech came, he took that box that the poster owned and replaced it with one from Shaw, but neglected to tell the customer that he now has a rental model from Shaw and not a free replacement for the box that he outright owned, so now he has 1 owned box and 1 rental box, because Shaw took away his dead box that he outright owned. I think that is the reason that they are charging a rental fee on the replacement box. They should have explained better the posters options, such as buying outright a replacement on maybe craigslist or similar instead of just taking away his dead owned box and replacing it with a Shaw furnished rental and not explaining that this is not a free replacement for your owned box and you do not now own it outright, it belongs to Shaw. The poster is under the impression that he now owns this replacement box and this is where the misunderstanding is coming from.
@g-idk -- I read the person's statement:
When I had a Shaw service tech over, he took my box and replaced it with another. I asked for my box back and he said to keep this one as mine was now gone. I just found out that I have been paying rent for my own box.
I did not ask why the Shaw technician visited. Was it just a "routine" equipment upgrade (Shaw noticing that one of his boxes is no longer supported, and Shaw has chosen to replace it), or was it a customer-initiated service-call because there is an issue with one of the customer-owned boxes?
See: About: Legacy TV box upgrade program for details about "upgrades" and "streamlining".
I interpreted "gone" as the technician went away, taking one of the customer-owned boxes with him. I did not interpret "gone" as being an euphemism for "dead" ("non-functional").
I asked @tedeebar for the date of the technician's visit, and to look at his previous Shaw invoices for the date on which Shaw first applied the rental fee. Has the person been paying a rental fee for years?
I can understand a rental fee, if the person is on a month-to-month payment schedule. I stated that a Value Plan offsets the rental fee by a matching credit, resulting in a net of "zero" per month for the replacement box.
@g-idk -- are you paying a rental fee for your Shaw TV box? Are you getting an offsetting credit? I am. Are you on a Value Plan? I am.
Without seeing a reply from the person, I don't know how to give further assistance.
Hi @mdk , yes I do pay a rental for the internet modem of $4.00 per month with no offset, but I do receive my hd box with an offset of the $5.00 rental. yes I am on a 2 year value plan, I'm not sure why you would interpret gone as the tech leaving, when it was clearly stated that the tech said the unit is gone, in the overall context of the message he had a tech come over for a problem the problem seems to be the faulty box and it was replaced with one from Shaw, also no where does he state that he was paying rental fees on both boxes just the one that was replaced by Shaw that is what is upsetting him. When he says I have been paying rental fees on my own box , he is referring to the replacement box that he received from Shaw, because he is under the false impression that he now owns that box since Shaw took his previously purchased box away I guess we must read the same post and come to completely different understandings of what the poster is trying to get across. But anyways I will always respect your point of view you are Grand Master for a reason and I in no way was meaning to upset you, I just thought maybe you had missed a sentence in the post, but I see you did not, it is just a misunderstanding of what the poster @tedeebar was trying to say, I read it one way and you read it another. Have a great day and Stay Safe.
Now that I know this is an open forum...please make sure my phone number is yanked off...whoever is in charge of the site. I was so upset yesterday in dealing with Shaw. The person was trying but all seemed in vain...I had a dropped call, terribly long waits and a poor guy who did not know his job. I was quoted a nice price for internet however the price was retracted the next day...lastly...just so you all know, the PVRs are both mine and it is documented in Shaw's records
@g-idk -- yes I do pay a rental for the internet modem of $4.00 per month with no offset, but I do receive my hd box with an offset of the $5.00 rental. yes I am on a 2 year value plan,
Hmm. My Shaw invoice lists:
Advanced WiFi Modem Rental Discount - 2-year ValuePlan -4.00
Advanced WiFi Modem Rental 4.00
Shaw Gateway HDPVR Rental M11653TR9278 15.00
Gateway Promotion -15.00
namely, offsets for both the PVR and the Hitron modem that I am "renting" from Shaw. Time to rub my lucky rabbit's foot. 🙂
> I'm not sure why you would interpret gone as the tech leaving,
Elvis has left the building -- he is gone; also, he is a goner. Grab a thesaurus. 🙂
> he had a tech come over for a problem
To repeat, that is one of two possible explanations:
The person did not explicitly say which it was -- you must be reading between the lines, or you have some "private" dialogue with the person, if you can unilaterally rule-out the latter point.
> the problem seems to be the faulty box
Yes, that was the technician's conclusion, but the person did not say that the reason for the service-call was a problem with one of their boxes. The technician could have replaced a kinked coaxial-cable, or a damaged power-cord, before deciding that those peripherals were not the cause of the customer's symptoms.
> nowhere does he state that he was paying rental fees on both boxes
Correct. The only questions, which only the person can answer, is for how many weeks/months/years the rental fee has been charged, and when the charge started.
> When he says I have been paying rental fees on my own box , he is referring to the replacement box that he received from Shaw,
He? She? Them? They? What's the correct pronoun?
Really? How can you rule-out the possibility that the rental fee has been charged for a long time? The person has not indicated, in this forum, when the rental fee started. Until the person does, it's a matter of interpretation, given the limited information supplied by the author.
As BC PHO Dr. Bonnie Henry says be kind, be calm, and be safe.
I was reading through this comment and I really cannot remember why they took my old box.I am guessing the tech thought it was older and decided to change it....it was probably ten years or more ago but again, only guessing. As I stated in my comments,I was completely right, the 2 pvrs are both mine and Shaw said they can actually see it on their computer systems....both are owned by owner.I feel bad for some people who give away their items to companies due to just not remembering.
Thanks @tedeebar for straightening that out, @shaw-tony will probably remove your phone number on here. Your first post, they way I read it lead me down a different path about your pvr's though, I understood that a Shaw tech had replaced one of your own purchased pvr's with one of there's and now you were paying a rental fee for this replacement box. If both pvr's are listed with Shaw as you being an outright owner then how in the world would you be paying a rental fee on them. well hopefully you get this straightened out,
