@Willenns -- sorry, but I do not use Thunderbird. Does it have an option to enable "SSL", or under a setting window, to use "authentication" (your Shaw ID & password) when sending E-mail?
Maybe, a Google-search for "Thunderbird configure outgoing" will help?
