Motorola SBG6580 Surfboard Extreme 3.0 Wireless Cable Modem or alternate - not having luck with the AR6 or previous Hitron from Shaw. Would it be possible to get my own?
> not having luck with the AR6 or previous Hitron from Shaw
I doubt that Shaw will have trained its technicians & support staff for "foreign" devices.
My HITRON is working fine. Yesterday, the Shaw SpeedTest showed a maximum of 348 Mbits/second, where I'm paying for "300". Wireless works fine, too.
So, what symptoms are you experiencing? What devices are connected to the HITRON? Are you using "CAT-5e" Ethernet cables? You need at least a dual-core 2.0 Ghz computer for the SpeedTest to run at its full speed.
@tmf 3rd party modems are not supported. What troubles are you experiencing when it comes to the BlueCurve modem and Hitron?
My original cable modem/router setups were pretty well stock from Shaw. Then for a few years I tried bridging an AirPort Extreme Time Capsule and enjoyed pretty stable connections.
More recently I decided to go with the Blue Curve router / modem setups parking my AirPort Extreme. It now just sits as a Time Machine back drive.
I have stopped buying wireless network hardware favouring renting all my Shaw gear. The promotions help with the price and I don’t have to worry about obsolescence. Other benefits include tight standards and support.
My gear is set to dual band with pods. All works very well and supports a number of wireless devices including Wireless TV players.
Unless someone has very special requirements I suggest sticking with the Shaw gear.
After swapping out the Bluecurve modem a few times with same issues, it was suggested I go back to the Hitron in bridge mode. So far...I have not had any issues fingers crossed...
