Other guys claim to be cheaper - what's the catch?

I've been a 20 year plus customer with Shaw, and my two year contract is coming up for renewal.  I'm pretty happy with what I have, so would be happy to re-up with the same package for the same price.  So I contact my friendly Shaw chat agent, and Oh no - you can't get that deal, but for only a few dollars more ....  This seems to always be the story, you call them and get upselled.  To be fair, I did get upsold to my current package and it is exactly what we like.  I have:

  • Internet 300
  • Total TV on 2 TV's
  • Home phone with unlimited Canada and US calling

Long story short, Telus says they can match what Shaw is giving me for $35 LESS than I'm paying now.  I'm a bit nervous about Telus' legendary service ("Don't telus your problems, 'cause we don't really care"), but $35/mo is more than $800 over the life of the contract, and I'll probably save $1200 if I don't renew at the new, improved price.  So, what am I missing here?

The Telus deal is cheaper because you would be a new customer and have promos available, same as if you were a Telus customer switching to Shaw.

My agreement is ending soon as well and I am and close to ending a 25 year relationship with Shaw. The only reason I stay is because of TV, I can get a better deal for internet from a third party. All I really need is around 75 mbps down with unlimited data, to maintain all of our streaming services.

We will see what they have to offer at renewal time and go from there.
