However, unless @Scare1 is an alias for your ID, please leave it to @Scare1 to decide whether the advice given is acceptable, either as a "reasonable bypass" or as a "solution".
(Re: USB-to-LAN adapter) That's a great idea! The old laptop only has USB 2 ports, but I've got a PCMCIA-to-2xUSB3 card handy, which would get it up to the full LAN speed.
I'd still like to plug some storage directly in to the router though. It looks like it's designed for it.
