Cable Box is Running Hot

Is that an issue?  Is there any fire danger or will it just result in some electric burnout?  Its very warm to the touch even when it hasn't been in use for several hours.

Which box? An older one? An Arris Gateway? BlueCurve?

Older boxes have a disk-drive inside, to store recordings. If that disk-drive is beginning to fail, it works "harder" to read/write, which generates additional heat, because the disk-drive is "busy" a larger percentage of time.

What is the room temperature? The warmer it is, the more air-flow is needed to cool the box.

Is the box "free-standing" -- not crowded by other devices or books or papers? On a hard surface, not a cloth?

It won't hurt the box to disconnect its power-cord overnight, and reconnect it when you want to watch TV.

I have noticed the same thing. Newer small box that connects to the gateway. Even when it is not in use it is hot. There is nothing around it but the room is warm due to the heatwave.
