Connecting D-Link Router to Shaw Modem

Karen07

We are trying to reconnect our D-Link router to the shaw modem, we had it connected before for almost a year without the bridge and it worked awesome. Now it connects but we cannot search or use the internet both with bridge on and without bridge. It was working up to when Shaw informed us we had to do a reset because of another issue we were having.  Now that original issue is fixed but the D-Link router will not connect properly to the modem.  We have also tried 3 other routers with no luck so its something to do with the reset of the Shaw modem and not the router. I have chatted to 5 different Shaw techs and no one has been able to solve the issue. They keep saying its the router but it can't be as we have tried now 3 different types and all have the same problem and it was working prior to the reset.

You sure bridge mode wasn’t turned on? A reset will turn it off. Did you follow these instructions.

It was not turned on originally as we had two wifi's to connect to, one to the gateway system and one to the D-link router. We tried to do the bridge with the Shaw tech but lost all wifi capabilities when we did that.  They could see we were connected but we could not search anything. The tech then tried to add a second IP to our account and that did not work either. We still could not search anything.

Strange. Second ip should fix the issue, I would contact Shaw again and see if someone else can figure it out.

@Karen07 -- It was not turned on originally, as we had two wifi's to connect to, one to the gateway system and one to the D-link router.

That is good. The "non-bridged" BlueCurve was broadcasting its WiFi network(s), and your router was broadcasting its WiFi network.

> We tried to do the bridge with the Shaw tech but lost all wifi capabilities when we did that.

Yes, "bridging" the BlueCurve disables its WiFi networks.

If you did not power-off your router, it should still be broadcasting its WiFi network -- you can connect to that network, but you will have no Internet access, due to the configuration changes inside the BlueCurve.  Note that "connecting" to the Internet is a multi-step process: first, your computer connects to your router, and second, your router connects to the BlueCurve modem, and third, your BlueCurve modem connects to Shaw's network, and finally, Shaw's network connects to all the Internet.

I recommend that you power-off your router, by disconnecting its electrical power. Then, reconnect the power-cord. After your router restarts, your router should still be broadcasting your WiFi network. When you connect to it, you should have full Internet access, including the ability to "search" for web-sites.

> The tech then tried to add a second IP to our account and that did not work either. We still could not search anything.

They probably successfully added the second IP-address to your Shaw account, but they probably did not properly instruct you on how to configure the BlueCurve, nor your router, to actually use that additional IP-address.

Rather than telling you how to use that additional IP-address, let's keep it simple: power-off your router, and then power it on. That should fix your problem.

Final notes:

1. your router probably has multiple Ethernet sockets. Be sure that the Ethernet cable from the BlueCurve connects to the "WAN" (or "uplink") socket on your router, not to any of the "LAN" ports.

2. Try a different Ethernet cable between the BlueCurve and your router.

3. Disconnect the current Ethernet cable between your BlueCurve and your router, and place the two clear-plastic ends side-by-side. Look closely at the 8 wires. Those coloured wires MUST be in the same order on both ends.  If not, try a different Ethernet cable.

So we are now connected using the bridge option but when we are searching it is so slow, photos take forever to load.  When we disconnect the router the speed is fine.  Spent 3 hours on the phone with shaw and another 3 hours on the phone with D-Link 😞 Still no solution

@Karen07 -- check the printing on the Ethernet cables:

  • Shaw modem <--> your router
  • your router <--> your computer
  • Shaw modem <--> your computer

Be sure that the labelling includes "CAT 5e" or "CAT 6", because the "CAT 5" cable is limited to 100 Mbits/second, while "CAT 5e" maxes-out at 1000 Mbits/second, and "CAT 6" is even faster.

At what speed are you subscribed?  150 Mbits/second? 300? 600 (grandfathered)? 750? 1000? 1500?

Which model of D-Link router?  How old is it?  Maybe, it's not "up to snuff" for throughput of ultra-fast speeds.

What about the speed (and health) of the disk-drive inside your computer? Old might mean "slow" for storing large images. Old might mean "wearing-out" -- taking multiple attempts to write each block of data to the disk-drive.

Do you have more than one web-browser installed? Windows 10 still has Internet Explorer (well-hidden). Have you tried other web-browsers (Safari? Firefox? Google Chrome?) to see if they are any faster?
