More information on Internet Issue

So, when streaming to Twitch at 1080p 6000 bit rate, my bit rate is going from 2400 to 4000, down to 3000 etc.  Resulting in 77% frames dropped.

When I drop to 720p 3000 bit rate, only around 10% frames drop.

So I went to do the Ookla speed test, it showed 600 download and 20 upload, seems good right?

Well, almost every other speed test on the internet aside from Ookla owned websites, show my upload is anywhere between 1.9 and 3 Mbps, which is consistent with the frames dropped from the 720p stream.  A 720p stream takes about 2.5-3 Mbps to stream, and if its dropping to 2ish then you will be getting some frames dropped.

So whats going on?  Look.

And there was no process to send my issue to the engineer...

And there was no process to send my issue to the engineer.  I talked to the engineer that fixed it today himself, why are you telling me its nonsense?  He actually implied that most tech's aren't knowledgeable enough to use the tools to detect the issue I had, but he seemed to imply that it was possible.  I argued with their tech support for hours begging for a 2nd tech to come out, because the 1st tech said it was all fine, it wasnt.

I did share the solution.  However, today the engineer contacted me personally about this.  There was noise on the node, within my area.  Apparently the Shaw engineer has seen this before and suspected what was going on, but he had to find out where in the node it was.  He found the problem by isolating where the noise was coming from (in a general area of my node) and then went to peoples houses, it ended up that someone had an MTS modem hooked up to Shaw equipment or something?  Anyways, he told me he had to disconnect all of their stuff and when he did that, it fixed the problem.  He was explaining how it worked, but I wasn't paying full attention, something about the MTS modem trying to send signals through Shaw's network and it basically messes it up.

So, I really was experiencing poor uploads, it had nothing to do with my application or other peoples servers.  It was essentially Shaw's problem, but caused by an MTS customer.

@dietpepsirocks -- Can everyone using Shaw Internet ... try CIRA speed test, and show me the results.

Everyone?

I posted to your other thread on this forum.

Because the CIRA site is somewhere beyond Montréal, the results are affected, as compared to the Shaw Speed Test site closest to me near Vancouver.

Your message seems to have been truncated, but you are correct.

As I wrote in your other thread, without "traceroute" outputs to each of those "speed-testing" sites, it is impossible for anyone to give an accurate analysis of your issue.  If there is a "bottle-neck" somewhere, your messages have not shown sufficient data to identify where it is located.

Produce "traceroute" outputs to each of those "speed-testing" and "streaming" sites to make it possible to give an accurate analysis of your issue.  If there is a "bottle-neck" somewhere, seeing those traces should be beneficial.

If they're to like specific servers, how do I traceroute those servers?  How do I find out what servers to traceroute?

I did a tracert to twitch.tv and theres one time out towards the end, I'm not sure if thats normal or not.

looks like I'm going to cancel my internet after 18 years of being with Shaw

The guy came out, apparently changed everything, spoke with the engineer who claims its fine, immediately sends me to Ookla (typical sponsorship) I show him IN REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS the internet is slow almost non existent, he saw it, and acknowledged it and they claim theres nothing they can do.

Are there any engineers on Shaw, I talked to one on the forums here before?

@dietpepsirocks -- how do I traceroute those servers ?

While connected to TWITCH.TV from a command-line prompt in Windows, enter the command:

   netstat -a -n | find "TCP" | find "EST" | FIND ":443" | SORT /+43

You will get a long list of "https" ("Secure HTTP") connections.

Close the TWITCH web-page, and repeat the command.

You'll see a much-shorter list, now that your computer has no connections to TWICH.

So, try "traceroute" to each of the TWITCH-related IP-addresses (omit the duplicates). Post the results.

> there's one time-out towards the end; I'm not sure if that's normal or not.

Perfectly normal -- some routers are configured to NOT respond to "PING" or "TRACEROUTE" packets.

My traceroute seems very quick:

(omitting a few hops within Canada, and starting with Shaw's router in Washington State)

  10 ms  rc1wt-be40.wa.shawcable.net [66.163.68.18]
   *     Request timed out.
  12 ms  151.101.194.167  (www.twitch.tv)

> IN REAL WORLD APPLICATIONS the internet is slow

Not all the Internet "hops" are as quick as from your computer to the Shaw Speed Test (or any other similar) site.

In what city/town are you located? Other people in this forum who are in Saskatchewan, namely east and south of Edmonton, have reported "slow" hops between them and Edmonton.  Your location makes a difference.

Do you have a laptop that you can take to a "ShawGo" or "ShawOpen" WiFi access-point, and connect to Twitch, to see if your Internet, through those access-points, is "slow" ?
