Ping spikes on wired connection (mostly) while playing games

During gameplay and occasionally when trying to load pages on Shaw 150 (upgraded to 300 I believe), my internet siezes up. I have a wired connection to a hitron modem.

Although it's only occasional (every 5-10 minutes) and my average latency is about 28ms, this has actually made a lot of games unplayable since the game will either freeze up for about 10 seconds at a time or outright disconnect me.

Upon running winMTR to all of these game servers ( and www.google.com ), I found that I have 0 packet loss and a "Worst" of over 1000 ms. I'm not sure why this is causing me to completely sieze up for extended periods of time and disconnect, but perhaps the games themselves decide to deal with extremely high ping that way.

In any case, I feel as though having a wired connection should generally be preventing these sorts of consistency issues.
