@railwayman any modem should work as long as it is in bridged mode to pass all routing features to your POE equipment.

I m looking to buy an outside camera that requires POE connection, can I connect that camera directly in the back of my Hitron cable modem.

You do not "need" to do it, but if you want to dedicate a "public" (somewhere on the Shaw network) IP-address to the camera, so that you (and others ???) can access the camera from anywhere on the Internet, you have to "bridge" the cable-modem, to get one "public" IP-address for the camera and a second "public" IP-address for your computer.  But, if you want to access the camera only within your home-network, you do not need to "bridge" the cable-modem.

Further, you could configure the cable-modem to pass all network traffic (on a specific TCP/IP port) from the Internet into the "internal-network-only" camera, to make it accessible from the Internet. This is more complex, but is do-able.

POE requires an Ethernet cable to connect the device into some type of power-supply.  Then, the cable carries both "data" and "power".

So, either:

• you'll need another Ethernet cable to connect the power-supply to your cable-modem, or,
• you'll have to connect the Ethernet cable directly into the cable-modem, under the assumption that the Hitron will supply POE through the cable.

I know you probably already figured this out buy a Poe injector

And run your modem like normal none of Shaw's modems have Poe as of yet you may need to open a port on your firewall for the camera but that's about it.
