Is there an alternative to the Shaw XB6 cable modem for your higher plans (i.e., Gigabit and Internet 600)? We were on Internet 600 with the Shaw XB6 modem and the white noise put out by the fan was not something we could live with. It was in a well ventilated area with no enclosures and we did work with Shaw to try a second unit - same noise.
Is there any alternative to the Shaw XB6 modem - one without a fan? It got so bad that we recently moved back from Internet 600 to Internet 300 just so that we could use a modem other than the XB6 - the fanless Hitron unit. We would really appreciate an alternative. Please do have a look at your forum and you'll see that others have similar issues with this unit.
@nparakh -- have you noticed that your Internet access is any slower with the Hitron, running at "only" 300 Mbps ?
Not many web-sites can "push" out data at over 300 Mbps. So, downgrading from 600 to 300 won't have any effect.
Of course, if you have more than 3 computers, each simultaneously downloading at 100 Mbps, then having 300 Mbps will be a "bottle-neck".
Downloading a full CD-ROM of data, namely over 600 Mbytes, at 300 Mbits/second, will take 20 seconds, if your computer's disk-drive can store data that quickly. Upgrading to 600 Mbits/second will cut the time to 10 seconds. Is that a great benefit?
Downloading the equivalent of a DVD of data, namely 8 times as much, will either be 160 seconds, or 80 seconds. During those 160 seconds, practice "20/20/20" -- 20 minutes of screen-time, 20 seconds break, while you focus your eyes on something 20 feet away -- as a "health-break".
Now this app that you have to use to port forward is horrific.. it locked a few IPs in in reserve and Im stuck using them..
