The need is simple: I want to watch shows recorded with my old Shaw Gateway HDPVR before an eventual upgrade (forced or not). After the initial "not possible", I've been told by a Shaw customer representative that I can watch my shows recorded on my old Gateway HDPVR box after upgrading to Ignite TV leaving the Gateway connected to the cable outlet. The person was probably an account manager and not a technical person. In the past, I lost my recordings after switching from a Motorola box to the current Gateway HDPVR.
After some Internet research, I found several answers but no consensus:
- Once the Ignite TV box is activated, the old box won't work anymore because it will be deactivated (the "brick" situation)
- Once the Ignite TV box is activated, the old box will continue to work as long as the RF cable is still connected but only for playing the shows already recorded on the local hard drive - i.e. no channels available on the old Gateway (the "connected player" situation)
- Once the Ignite TV box is activated, the old box will continue to work if the RF cable was disconnected from the Gateway BEFORE the activation of the new box - like in the previous situation, I can use the old box for watching the old records (the "unconnected player" situation)
- Once the Ignite TV box is activated, regardless of the situation, the old box will only work until it is restarted (power outage, remotely rebooted by Shaw, power cycling the unit) after which it won't even boot completely (the "delayed brick" situation)
- In any of the functional cases (2, 3, and 4), the old box will, eventually, stop working by the end of 2024)
Can anyone from Shaw/Rogers confirm any of the above scenarios and provide some assurance that the selected scenario is correct? Maybe some details?
Did anyone on this forum try any of the above? With what results? Does Shaw/Rogers provide the ability to watch the shows recorded on an old box after upgrading as a general (and maybe new) policy?
Thank you
