Need to Buy a New TV

My 13-year old Samsung 32" TV bit the dust a few days so I'm going to buy a new TV, another 32" Samsung.

I'm wondering if I should buy the 720p resolution TV or the 1080p resolution TV?  I see with Ignite TV which is what I have that the default resolution is 720p.  So...if I bought the 720p resolution TV, would I be able to bump up the resolution to 1080p?

I also saw this online ~ If you set the resolution for higher than your TV can manage, you will be faced with a black screen.  You will need to adjust the resolution accordingly.

Thanks so much for any help anyone can give me to make my decision.

@merrymermaid  A 4K TV is ultra high definition which has a resolution of 3840 x 2160, compared to the 1920 X 1080 that you are looking at. But, watching cable TV, 1080 is all you would need. You might find a good deal on a 4K TV, which would work but would adjust the resolution down to 1080.

@merrymermaid , Hi just me again.  If I were you I would buy a 1080p tv, and not just a 720p.  I don't believe you can jump a 720p tv resolution up to 1080, it would more likely be a 1080p tv jumping a 720p broadcast up to 1080p, if the new tv has what's called an upscaler, even if it doesn't have one you are just better off biting the bullet and getting a 1080p tv.  This is just my opinion.  Happy new tv hunting, good luck.

@merrymermaid  if you subscribe Sportsnet and TSN and use the Netflix app, you would want a 4K TV.

Thanks rstra for your prompt reply 😊 I don't subscribe to Sportsnet nor TSN and I don't have Netflix, I only use my TV for watching live TV and for recording TV shows on my DVR.  Could you tell me what a 4K TV is please

Thanks, g-idk, for getting back to me so promptly 😊  I just replied to your solution but it appears I lost it so here goes again.

Tomorrow I'm going to Walmart to check out both the TV's.  There's barely any difference in price between these 2 TV's.  From what you suggested it sounds like the 1080p TV is the way to go.

I don't know what an upscaler is so I'll look up the definition online.

And thanks for your Happy new TV hunting wishes.  I'm suffering a bit of withdrawal after 3 days without TV 😧 LOL!

Thanks ever so much again rstra 😊 I'm starting to feel quite certain that the Samsung 32" 1080p would be best for me.  My TV watching is very basic so i don't need any bells & whistles 😉 I really appreciate all the help you've gifted me with over the years.
