Wanting to watch shows recorded on Gateway HDPVR box after upgrading to Ignite TV box

The need is simple: I want to watch shows recorded with my old Shaw Gateway HDPVR before an eventual upgrade (forced or not). After the initial "not possible", I've been told by a Shaw customer representative that I can watch my shows recorded on my old Gateway HDPVR box after upgrading to Ignite TV leaving the Gateway connected to the cable outlet. The person was probably an account manager and not a technical person. In the past, I lost my recordings after switching from a Motorola box to the current Gateway HDPVR.
After some Internet research, I found several answers but no consensus:

  1. Once the Ignite TV box is activated, the old box won't work anymore because it will be deactivated (the "brick" situation)
  2. Once the Ignite TV box is activated, the old box will continue to work as long as the RF cable is still connected but only for playing the shows already recorded on the local hard drive - i.e. no channels available on the old Gateway (the "connected player" situation)
  3. Once the Ignite TV box is activated, the old box will continue to work if the RF cable was disconnected from the Gateway BEFORE the activation of the new box - like in the previous situation, I can use the old box for watching the old records (the "unconnected player" situation)
  4. Once the Ignite TV box is activated, regardless of the situation, the old box will only work until it is restarted (power outage, remotely rebooted by Shaw, power cycling the unit) after which it won't even boot completely (the "delayed brick" situation)
  5. In any of the functional cases (2, 3, and 4), the old box will, eventually, stop working by the end of 2024)

Can anyone from Shaw/Rogers confirm any of the above scenarios and provide some assurance that the selected scenario is correct? Maybe some details?

Did anyone on this forum try any of the above? With what results? Does Shaw/Rogers provide the ability to watch the shows recorded on an old box after upgrading as a general (and maybe new) policy?

Thank you

@spoli58 -- as an experiment, before you switch to the newer technology, temporarily disconnect the coaxial-cable from your Gateway HDPVR.  Can you still select & view any of its recorded content?  That will give you a "preview" of your viewing future, after you switch.

It is extremely unlikely that any Shaw/Rogers employee will reply on this peer-to-peer discussion forum. So, any responses will be from volunteers who try to help other customers.

I just did a test.  I unplugged my coax hat goes to internet & TV Gateway. This leaves myTV Gateway connected to one of my TVs.
The access to recordings worked fine and I could not watch live TV which confirmed the Street to TV Gateway was disconnected.

Next step is to clarify with Shaw tech support if activating the Ignite TV send signal to Shaw TV Gateway to turn it off.  This iwll help to clarify whether the disconnect is required before activating Ignite TV.  I will disconnect prior to activating but just interested.

So this should work if TV & TV Gateway are connected and TV Gateway to street is disconnected.

I will only be able to watch it on the TV connected directly to the TV Gateway with coax cable as per my test.

I would really hope that SHAW/Rogers employees do reply/clarify here.  There is no reason why Shaw/Rogers should want us to lose our old recording on Shaw TV Gateway. They should be grateful that there appears to be a workaround so that we do not lose them as we upgrade to their new service.

This is a callout to SHAW/Rogers to clarify this for us. Thank you

We may need to do the disconnect prior to activating Ignite TV.
and we may only be able to watch them on one TV directly connected but we should definitely be told that this is possible if it is.
IT SURE LOOKS POSSIBLE. ... ... ... and my wife is very grateful if it is as she has many movie recordings to save & watch.

Shaw/ROGERS should want to clarify/confirm this for us as their customers. Some of us very longtime customers.
