Blue Curve Parental Controls and Porn and Horrible Customer Service and possible negligence claim?

I can't believe how horrible Shaw has been in the last 72 hours...  I have spent about 3 to 5 hours on multiple phone calls which always get disconnected; attempts at "chat support"; an in person attempted visit to a Shaw store; another phone call, all regarding the issue of Shaw Parental Controls (turned on for my children's devices) absolutely filtering 0% of adult content...

I have been told all of the following:

  1. It's only available to Shaw clients that also subscribe to Shaw Cable TV;
  2. The next Shaw employee told me that was not correct;
  3. One suggested I uninstall then reinstall the Blue Curve app, then changed his mind as it's only available to Shaw Cable TV subscribers;
  4. The same one (or different one, I can't remember anymore) said it was a known issue, but couldn't tell me how long it was known for;
  5. Another Shaw employee told me he just didn't know;
  6. No, there is no email address for me to send a letter to;
  7. No, there's just nothing to do.

Last night I did install Qustodio (like a "net nanny") and paid for that subscription and hopefully that works.  I have been pretty vigilant (or so I thought) with electronics, ie. must use in living room; they're not private; don't think they are; etc. but I also was totally comforted and felt backed up knowing there were built-in porn filters through Shaw.

Now, having gone through their search history, and finding website visit like "grannies-who-are-down-to-f___", etc. I really question what exactly Shaw thinks their legal obligation is to their clients.

I'm pretty done with Shaw what are other suggested alternatives?

If you live in the Greater Vancouver area, consider "peasant TV" -- an external TV antenna connected directly to your TV.

You should get the "over-the-air" channels: Knowledge Network, CBC, CTV, Global, CHEK, City, and maybe KVOS (Bellingham). As far as I know, there is no PR0N on those networks.

If your family's search-history is showing such "adult" searches through their Internet connection, what filtering is enabled within their device's web-browser? Can you disable WiFi, during some hours, to manage their Internet access?

Thank you for the feedback, I live in Calgary. I don’t actually have cable TV and I am looking at changing to VM media for Internet. I purchased software which now blocks adult content.  It’s excellent and I highly recommend it - Qustodio.

Hi Whyfb,

First off, are you trying to use parental controls using the admin GUI at http://10.0.0.1, or as part of the BlueCurve Home App?

Can you share a screenshot as to where and how you have the rules setup?

Also just to add, the search history you see could be from past auto complete searches. Its possible the actual search result did not actually return or any links that were click could of been blocked. I just tried myself with parental controls turned on using the BlueCurve Home app and this was my result. Hope you can share some more info on your situation.

I find it handy to use the BlueCurve Home app because then you dont need to install software on every device, you can manage it at a profile level instead. https://support.shaw.ca/t5/internet-articles/how-to-set-parental-controls-with-shaw-home/ta-p/5276
