BlueCurve Modem/Router - DNS Settings

I'm in the same situation as Jonathan. I'm also going to pack and return the device and go back to my old one.  Speaking with 4 people at Shaw in the past 24 hours, they all tell me the same thing: It is not a supported change, (ie, they don't provide support for that sort of things), the DNS cannot be changed, it is setup at their server level, my only option is to set DNS on each device manually.  The last conversation I had, they basically tell me that this service is for the "average user" (whatever that means) and what I"m trying to do is highly technical, which is why it is not a supported change as it would cause some support issues.  Wow. I wish I could have that same mentality at my work.

Bridge the modem from the Admin page and get your own router simple. If you are changing your DNS settings you likely want other advance features as well.

Simple.. But if I understand the online documentation, bridging will prevent pods from connecting.

Using an additional router is the solution that I have had to use but I am not satisfied. I would like to enforce a certain dns on all networks in my house, including anyone directly connected to the shaw modem. Setting your preferred dns is not a complicated network configuration, it is completely consumer level configuration.  I use Opendns to prevent my children from accessing porn and the like.  Please update the firmware to allow this configuration. I am going to be calling shaw when I get a chance to request a new modem.

Not only does it prevent pods from connecting, it disables the WIFI completely. I needed two IPS, which I had on my old Hitron, but in order to utilize two on the new modem it has to be put into bridge mode. This meant I had to purchase my own wifi router in order to access the 2nd IP as well as provide an internal WIFI setup for the rest of my devices.
What a pain. This has to be a SHAW imposed limitation on the device. I can't see why any new device would be removing features that make the device better.  It boils down to removing features that many people don't use often in order to cut down on tech support issues.
Now for some reason I am unable to access the device on the 2nd IP from within the home. No problem if I use a VPN to access it or I access it from a different IP from the one provided to me by Shaw.

Just received mine today and unfortunately there is still no support for this. I’m really disappointed. Back on the Hitron and returning this one.

Shaw doesn't  what you changing it

If they are spying, via queries you make to Shaw's DNS-server, you should feed them "suspicious" data.

Find the URLs of Russia-based web-sites.  Then open a command-line prompt, and enter commands such as:

   nslookup kremvax.ru

Shaw's "spying" will record your request, but you won't be accessing any web-site in RUSSIA.

Long story, from a long time ago: the name 'kremvax' allegedly was the UUCP node-name for a Russian-built, reverse-engineered, copy of an illegally-exported mini-computer in the "VAX/VMS" line of mini-computers (owned by DEC -- Digital Equipment Corporation), that allegedly was physically located in the Kremlin building in Moscow.  🙂

LOL, it's good they took out all of the features that a router is supposed to have because:

"People like me" will then go into the settings that they don't understand and start randomly changing things and end up having to reset it to default to make it work again.

But then, I know I would go back and start changing weird settings again, I just can't help it.

Not possible on the router as others mentioned and also not possible on Shaw's end as well.  I called and confirmed that it is not possible to change with the Bluecurve router, you need to go back to the Hitron.
