Cisco DPC3825 Wireless Modem - How to View and Update Firmware Version

I have a Cisco DPC3825 wireless modem provided by Shaw and would like to know how to find the current firmware version.

Page 84 of Shaw's DPC3825 User Guide states that the firmware version should be displayed at Status | Gateway of the advanced modem settings at 192.168.0.1 (I found identical instructions in the Rogers support article Check the Firmware Version on the Cisco DPC3825 Wi-Fi Modem) but my firmware version is not shown on any of my Status tabs. I've tried logging in to those advanced settings at 192.168.0.1 with both Firefox and MS Edge browsers, and tested while connected to my modem via both WiFi and Ethernet cable.

I would also like to know if firmware updates are pushed out to my modem automatically by Shaw, or if there something I need to do from my end (e.g., perform the occasional re-boot by unplugging the power cord and waiting for ~ 30 sec before plugging in again) to ensure the software/firmware for this modem is fully patched. Is there some way to run a manual check for a firmware update after logging in to the advanced settings of the DPC3825 at 192.168.0.1 that I'm not aware of?

I presume that Shaw "pushes" updates to the software version to the modem.

Hi mdk:

Thanks but that doesn't really help me since you have a different brand and model of wireless modem. Right now I'd just like someone to explain where I can view the version number and/or release date of the last firmware update delivered to my Cisco DCP3825 modem.

At this point I'm not even sure firmware updates for known security vulnerabilities are being provided to Shaw by Cisco. Shaw provided me with a refurbished DCP3825 modem a few years ago but according to the Cisco announcement Residential Gateway Model DPC3825 EPC3825 - Retirement Notification (dated 25-Jun-2017) the DPC3825 is obsolete and no longer supported by Cisco.

I assumed that Shaw Customer Service would contact me and offer a newer model when my DCP3825 reached end of service but that apparently isn't the case.

@lmacri -- from a PDF on the Cogeco web-site:

Welcome to the exciting world of high-speed Internet service. Your new Cisco® Model DPC3825 DOCSIS® 3.0 or EPC3825 EuroDOCSIS™ Wireless Residential Gateway is a cable modem that meets industry standards for high-speed data connectivity. The DPC3825 and EPC3825 residential gateway delivers data and wired (Ethernet) or wireless gateway capabilities to connect a variety of devices in the home or small office and support high-speed data access, all in one device. With a DPC3825 or EPC3825 residential gateway, your Internet enjoyment, home and business communications, and personal productivity will surely soar.

I doubt that Cogeco created the above wording. I presume that the wording was copied it from a Cisco web-site.

To me, it is unclear whether the Cisco web-site that you cited applies to both the DPC3825 and the EPC3825 devices. Is the latter device only deployed within Europe?

Hi mdk:

That Cogeco user guide is identical to the Shaw DPC3825 User Guide that I mentioned in my original post, except that the Cogeco PDF is v4021196 Rev A while the Shaw PDF is v4021196 Rev B.

I have no idea if Cisco's EPC3825 is only offered in Europe and don't really care since it's not listed at https://support.shaw.ca/t5/internet-articles/equipment-info-shaw-internet-modems/ta-p/5756 as one of wireless modems offered by Shaw.

I use a Cisco DPC3825 wireless modem.

@lmacri -- I use a Cisco DPC3825 wireless modem

So, the question remains: for that Cisco announcement that you cited, was it "sloppy-writing", i.e., did Cisco target that "sunset"  only for the European model, or your North American model?

A Shaw web-page: https://support.shaw.ca/t5/internet-articles/equipment-info-shaw-internet-modems/ta-p/5756 lists the cable-modems that Shaw is (or has been) deploying.

Your contract with Shaw should entitle you to one of the 3 current cable-modems:

  1. Hitron - "Advanced WiFi modem" -- for "Fibre+ 300", or slower;
  2. BlueCurve - "Fibre Gateway modem" -- for "Fibre+ 750";
  3. XB7 - "Fibre+ Gateway 2.0 modem" -- for "Fibre+ Gig", or faster.

that also are rented to "new" customers.

So, contact Shaw to get one of these "newer" devices, at no extra cost to you, if you have issues about the "sunset" of your current device.

Getting back to my original question, I still don't know why I cannot view my firmware version in the advanced settings (Status | Gateway) of my Cisco DPC3825 wireless modem when I log in at 192.168.0.1 via my browser. Hopefully someone using the same DPC3825 model will let me know if they have the same problem.

@lmacri Thanks for bringing this up! If you're still using the same modem and still needing help with finding out the latest firmware version, please reach out to our support. There is a way to find out using one of the internal tools. And if deemed necessary, since it's not displaying the firmware version properly on your end, you may need a modem replacement or upgrade!
