Voice Remote FAQs
This section addresses frequently asked questions (FAQs) about using the voice remote feature on Shaw Rogers Xfinity TV Remote Controls.
Press and hold the Microphone (Mic) button while speaking a command into the microphone located at the top of the remote.
Be sure to speak one to eight inches away from the microphone.
Release the Microphone (Mic) button when you have finished the command.
Voice control must be set to On in order for the Microphone (Mic) button to work..
The microphone is only on while you are pressing and holding the Microphone (Mic) button on your remote. A solid blue light on your remote and a microphone symbol on the TV connected to your Ignite TV Player lets you know that the microphone is on and listening for your voice commands.
After a user speaks into the remote, it is converted into a digital audio file that is internally transferred to the paired set-top for submission to our contracted service provider for processing. The processing involved is to transcribe and determine type of user's desired action, which generally enacts a feature on the set-top box (cable box). The resulting action and the translated resulting text is returned to the set-top.
The service provider may log number of successful or failed request and may aggregate that as real-time or reporting statistic as part of Shaw's service availability and service assurance monitoring. Shaw does not collect, store or record any voice transmissions.
The voice remote from Shaw supports natural language speech recognition, so you can search by keyword as well as by phrase. Use voice control to change channels, search for shows, get recommendations and more. See our Voice Control Overview article for additional Voice Command Tips. Here are some examples of voice commands:
"Watch CNN"
"Turn to Sportsnet West"
"Channel 199"
"Food Network"
"SpongeBob Square Pants"
"Show me scary movies"
"Record"
"Launch weather app"
"What should I watch?"
If your commands are not recognized, make sure you are speaking clearly and at a natural, conversational volume. Hold the remote one to eight inches away while giving a command and hold down the Microphone (Mic) button until you finish speaking. If you are still having trouble, consider whether or not there are other sources of noise near you that may be interfering with your voice commands.
The battery levels in your remote could also have an impact on voice commands. To check your battery level, visit the About section of the Ignite Settings menu. If your battery level is red or yellow, try changing your batteries.
The voice remote will only work with Ignite TV cable boxes. Once your voice remote is paired to a TV box, it is uniquely paired and will not control other Shaw digital boxes unless paired with another Ignite TV Player.
A voice remote is provided with each TV box when you sign up for Ignite TV service. Visit shaw.ca/tv to learn more.
