We have been Shaw customers for eight years. We have recently updated to the Ignite system.
There several aspects of the new Guide and PVR that we don't like.
When you chose the Guide, the video in the background remains playing. One can mute the sound. However, if you have CC on, these captions write on top of the Guide. When the Guide is on, turn off any other video.
In the old PVR, there was an option to record for one time slot only. This is missing in Ignite. So, for example, if you want BBC News but only at 10 p.m. you have to program this day-by-day. If you do it as a series, you will get every news broadcast throughout the day, which might be five or more. Add an option for "this time slot only".
When you hit the Shaw button to bring up the PVR information, there is a series of ads appear at the bottom. This is unnecessary and confusing clutter. Keep the display simple.
On recorded shows, rewind and advance is not as convenient as on the old system. For example, 30 s skip has to be hit one at a time. The system does not recognize three or four hit in quick succession.
For the guide: Go to Settings/Preferences/General and set the Background Darkness Level to 11.
For recording single episodes: Locate the show in the guide, press ok, select record, select “Just this episode”
Not sure why you are seeing ads when pressing the Shaw button.

Correct.
If you do not want to miss anything in the broadcast, press the PAUSE button before pressing the GUIDE button.
When the Guide is on, turn off any other video.
Use the PAUSE button to stop the sound & the captioning.

No, that option has not been removed.

Are you watching one of those "TV News" channels, that scroll advertisements at the bottom?

What happens when you hold-down that button for a few seconds?
Thanks.
Yes, setting the darkness obscures the image. You still need to mute to disable the sound. And if you happen to have closed captions on, these get written on top of the guide. We would prefer to just have the guide with no other distractions.
Yes, one can record a single episode. But suppose you want to set up a series of the BBC news recorded once a day. On the old unit, one could choose, e.g., 10 p.m. and only get that version. Now, you get every newscast - there is no option to chose a particular time slot.
When you press the Shaw button, you get a line with Guide Saved Recordings ... but right below it images of programs that, I guess, one might want to watch.
Thanks.
Yes, you can pause the show in the backgroud but if you happen to have closed captions on, these get written on top of the Guide. We would prefer that, when you switch to the Guide, there is nothing else going on.
You say that there is still an option to choose a time slot. We have not found it and we have also talked to Shaw support who claim it doesn't exist. Yes, you can record a single episode. But with the old unit we could set up a series for BBC News and choose a particlur time slot (say 10 p.m.) and only get that edition each day. Now you get every version throughout the day.

On the old unit, you could hit the 30 s skip button repeatedly and it would remember. The new unit doesn't recognize a second hit unit the first has been executed. We have discovered that you can say, e.g., "forward 2 minutes" and it will execute that command. This is a helpful feature.
@carlkross To set a timed recording:
If the program repeats every day, just set a series recording.
