Starting within the last week or so via Shaw BlueCurve, Netflix episodes of Star Trek: TNG have begun to show up on screen in "stretch" mode. The picture fills a 16:9 screen when of course the series was made in 4:3. People appear to be short and wide.
Using Netflix via a Sony TV or a Roku box the same evening to view the same episodes, they appear as 4:3. (Yes, with black bars on the sides. No, I have not touched the Sony's adjustments, or any other adjustments).
TNG is playing 4:3 on my BlueCurve box through Crave, but is stretched on Netflix. On my iOS app it is playing in 1080. I read in a post on another site that Netflix stretches 4:3 content on their set top box software.
