How do you save config /settings on an XB 6 gateway

tiger955

I did this two years ago when changing gateways but cannot remember or find how to do it.

It had to be done on my cell phone from the Shaw app, & you needed internet connection to be able to retrieve & re-install on new gateway from what I remember.

Going from XB6 to XB8 & need to take all settings across.

If you’re a current Rogers Xfinity App user activating a new Rogers Xfinity Gateway:

You can easily transfer your WiFi settings*, profiles and Pods from your previous Gateway to your new Gateway using the Rogers Xfinity App.

  1. Open your Rogers Xfinity  App to follow the prompts.
    • If you don’t see any prompts:
      1. Tap the Account icon.
      2. Scroll down to Devices.
      3. Select Activate Rogers Xfinity Gateway and then Get Started
  2. During the in-app flow, you will be given the option to Keep Previous Settings.
    • Keep Previous Settings is recommended to avoid individually updating all wireless devices with the new network name and password, including Smart Home devices.
  3. Your devices should automatically reconnect to your new Gateway’s WiFi network.

*Settings can only be transferred during the first set-up attempt in the app, once new settings have been saved the previous ones will be lost.

I'll let you know how it goes as the new Gateway has just arrived (letting it warm up first).

@tiger955 -- if you power-off your cell-phone, and then power-on it, it should automatically use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to download the correct settings, after you select the SSID being broadcast by the XB8 cable-modem.

I agree with @rstra -- do you have any "filtering" or "port-forwarding" rules defined in the XB6, that you want to recreate on the XB8 ?

Hi rstra,

Everything, I have several fixed ip addresses, device names, network names & passwords, e.t.c. It will take hours to recreate!

I did the backup / restore with a Shaw tech when replacing an XB6 with XB7  & then to another XB7 & then back to an XB6 because the 2.4Ghz WIFI was hopeless! I had 5 smart plugs that wouldn't stay connected when using the XB7, I'm praying the XB8 is going to work!

Thanks for your reply.

Update:

The "Rogers Monopoly" Xfinity App (which you will need data/internet access) solution above worked fine (except see below), automated install, only had to type in the mac address of gateway, then power up new gateway. The app did everything, default setting was to copy over all your config/setup from old gateway, you could opt for new passwords & settings. 20 minutes & it was all done!

The only issue was no WiFi access on several devices including laptop, long story short, the new gateway defaulted the WPA3 security for my WiFi, which most of my devices don't have. But was able in the Xfinity app to change back to WPA2 - all working even the five 2.4Ghz devices that didn't work with an XB7 Gateway!

On my XB7, i "split" the WiFi, creating one SSID for my devices that required 2.4 Ghz, and another SSID for my devices that work with 5 Ghz.

I have them split but the five Broadlink plugs would not work with the XB7, I tried two of them before going back to a XB6.

The XB7 if my memory serves me right has less aerials on both 2.4 & 5Ghz than the XB6, that's all I can put it down to (even the Shaw tech couldn't explain it).

The XB8 has many more aerials than both the 6 & 7, maybe they learned something!

Update on update:- Found that the fixed IP address settings did not carry over neither did the login password (it used the default one).
