Noisy & hot XB6. Can I go back to my Hiltron?

I had a silent and fanless Hiltron from 2015 to 2023. I streamed F1 races for hours while my kid watched other shows on a different device. We almost never had a glitch. It basically never let us down even once. And the distance seemed to be better than this XB6.

I have noticed that during races, the HD cuts out more often than the old one did. I've noticed the internet suddenly just cut out sometimes. My family is noise sensitive. We can hear this thing humming away in the evenings. The heat concerns me. I don't leave papers near it even though the location is where a lot of paper is. It must be using more electricity than the old one.

I just don't like this thing and it feels like a downgrade. I don't need to connect 100 devices. 3 max. That's it. What are my options ? I'd rather just stay with Shaw even though there is a silent Telus box built into this new house.  Can I go back to a Hiltron modem ? Is there any other modem available for my plan that isn't a noisy hot energy consuming contraption ?

Can someone prove to me with data that this XB6 has superior distance than the Hiltron? Give me a reason to keep this thing other than the "connect 100 devices!" nonsense.

Note that Fahrenheit 451 describes three publications:

  1. 1951 novel by science-fiction writer Ray Bradbury;
  2. movie produced in 1966, based on the novel;
  3. a movie remake produced in 2018.

Ray Bradbury asked a firefighter "at what temperature does paper (books) burn?". The response was 451 degrees Fahrenheit.  You would have a real problem if your cable-modem's temperature was way about 212 Fahrenheit -- the temperature at which water boils, at sea-level. Don't ever touch the cable-modem, if it is "boiling-hot".

Short answer: upgrade to the XB7 or XB8 Shaw cable-modems. They make no noise, because they are "fanless".

New customers of "Ignite Internet Gigabit" (1 Gbit/second) automatically get the "Ignite WiFi Gateway Gen 2 modem", which is the XB7.

For a while, Shaw had a promotion where new customers of 500 Mbit/second Internet would also get the XB7.

Currently, new Rogers 1.5 Gbit/second customers get the "Ignite WiFi Gateway Gen 3" cable-modem, the XB8.

The Hitron was limited to 300 Mbps downloads, and was limited to 15 Mbps uploads.

In order to get xb7 or 8 you need to get their gig or 1.5 gig plan or you will be stuck with xb6 unless you upgrade to better plan.  Just saying.  Sorry bout the noise.  Telus modem even their new gateways not noisy.
