Data caps are designed to prevent customers from incurring unwanted data overages by limiting data spending while travelling or using plans that do not include data. At Shaw Mobile, there are two types of data caps:

  • National (on the Shaw or Nationwide network)
  • International (International/USA)

What are National Data Caps?

While we do not have data overage fees in Canada (or offer access to pay-per-use data in Canada), we still enforce a cap on data Add-Ons that can be purchased every month (for use on Shaw or Nationwide networks). National data Add-Ons are capped at a maximum of $50.00 per month and must be purchased in advance of using mobile data in Canada. If you require more than $50.00 in data Add-Ons, you can opt-out of National data overages online in My Shaw Mobile. You can save on mobile data by connecting to Shaw Go WiFi hotspots across Western Canada, which are included with all Shaw Mobile rate plans.

National Data Cap Limit (Shaw or Nationwide network)

Your maximum chargeable amount when purchasing Shaw or Nationwide data Add-Ons is $50.00 per account. Upon reaching your National Data Cap you will no longer have access to mobile data, unless you have opted out of National data caps in My Shaw Mobile and continue to purchase beyond the $50.00 limit.

What are International Data Roaming Caps?

If travelling to the United States or an international destination not included with your rate plan or a One-Time Pass Add-On, you have the potential to incur data roaming charges. To avoid data roaming charges, we recommend disabling Data Roaming on your device when travelling outside of Canada. If you maintain access to mobile data while roaming, you will be charged based on the roaming rates of the destination you are visiting, up to the $100.00 limit of the International Data Roaming Cap.

Data Roaming Cap Limit

Your maximum chargeable amount when using data outside of your plan and Add-On inclusion while roaming is $100.00 per line to a maximum of $100.00 on your account. Upon reaching your Data Roaming Cap your access to mobile data will be automatically restricted.

Can I Opt Out of the Data Roaming Cap?

At the time of activation, all Shaw Mobile accounts have National and International data caps automatically enabled. You may opt-out of the data roaming cap for any given bill cycle online in My Shaw Mobile.

Disclaimer: Upon opt-out of your data roaming cap, there are no additional safeguards or notifications for mobile data overages. All charges associated with exceeding the $50.00 (national) or $100.00 (international) data caps are your responsibility.

Take the following steps to manage your data roaming cap:

  1. Login to My Shaw Mobile
  2. Click on Manage Features
  3. Under International Roaming, select Manage your Data Roaming Cap
  4. Agree to the terms and conditions and select Disable to disable your roaming cap or Enable to enable your roaming cap

Note: If you opt-out of a data cap, you will be automatically opted back into the data roaming cap at the beginning of your next bill cycle for your protection.

How Do I Enable International Roaming?

To use your mobile device and phone number outside Canada, you must enable the International Roaming feature on your account, which is configurable per line. Pay Per Use rates will apply when roaming, unless you are in a destination included with your rate plan or have added a One-Time Pass that includes roaming in that location. There are two ways to enable the International Roaming feature for your account/line:

Online in My Shaw Mobile

  1. Log in to My Shaw Mobile
  2. Select Manage Features
  3. Under International Roaming, agree to the terms and conditions, then select Enable

How Do I Disable the Roaming Feature?

You can disable Nationwide roaming by turning off National Roaming and/or US Roaming by signing into My Shaw Mobile.

  1. Log in to My Shaw Mobile
  2. Select Manage Features
  3. Under Nationwide Roaming, select Disable
  4. Under U.S. Roaming, select Disable

Will I Receive Data Roaming Cap Notifications?

Yes, each user type will receive data roaming cap notifications.

As the Account Holder you will be informed via text message and email if:

  • a number or line on your account starts roaming in an international destination,
  • the roaming cap is reached, or
  • the roaming cap is turned off

As an Authorized User or Device User you will be informed via text message if:

  • your number starts roaming in an international destination,
  • the roaming cap is reached, or
  • the roaming cap is turned off
